Combination skin can feel like two different skin types at once—oily in some areas, dry or normal in others—making it tricky to find a routine that keeps everything balanced. The key is choosing products and steps that control excess oil without stripping moisture, while still keeping drier areas comfortable and hydrated. In this guide, we’ll break down a simple, effective skincare routine designed specifically for combination skin, helping you achieve a clearer, more even, and healthy-looking complexion.
Step 1. Cleanse
Always start out with a cleanser! My go-to is Cetaphil, while CeraVe is another great alternative. To use, start by wetting your face with lukewarm water, never hot as it can dry out the skin more. Apply a small amount of cleanser to your hands, and gently massage it onto your skin for 20–30 seconds. Then, rinse thoroughly and pat your face dry.
If the cleansers above are not for you, another great option is micellar water. Both Garnier & Bioderma are great, affordable options. To use, simply soak a cotton pad with micellar water and gently wipe it across your face—no rinsing needed. It’s great for quick cleansing, sensitive skin, or removing makeup.
Step 2. Exfoliate
My next step is using an exfoliant. I fell in love with this Dermalogica exfoliant and use it 1–3 times a week. It helps remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and smooth the skin’s texture. To use it, pour a small amount of powder into wet hands and mix it with water until it forms a light paste or foam. Then, gently massage it onto damp skin in circular motions for about 30–60 seconds before rinsing thoroughly.
If you would prefer to use a liquid, I recommend using Paula’s Choice, as it is lightweight and great for sensitive skin. After cleansing, apply a small amount to a cotton pad or your hands and gently pat it onto dry skin. Do not rinse it off—simply let it absorb into your skin before following with the rest of your skincare routine.
Step 3. Tone
After cleansing and/or exfoliating, I use toner. I personally use Byoma, while I’ve heard Fresh is also lovely and smells amazing! These products help hydrate the skin and remove any leftover dirt or oil. To use it, apply a small amount to a cotton pad or your hands and gently pat it across your face. Let it absorb into the skin before applying serums or moisturizer.
Step 4. Targeted Treatment
After the toner has absorbed, I move on to serums. I use Estée Lauder; however, I also use Byoma when I want a more budget-friendly option. Serums are an important step because they target specific skin concerns like dryness, acne, dullness, or fine lines. To use, apply a few drops of serum to your face and gently pat it into the skin until absorbed.
Step 5. Moisturize
The final and most important step is moisturizing. I’ve been using La Roche-Posay for years and have always enjoyed how hydrated it keeps my skin. I make sure to use the version with sunscreen. Always use sunscreen, no matter the time of day or year! Another option I’ve used is Bubble Skincare. This does not have UV protection, although it does have blue-light protection. If you’re someone like me who sits at a desk all day, this can help protect your skin from screen time exposure. To use it, apply a small amount to your face and gently massage it into the skin using upward, circular motions, making sure to cover your entire face and neck.
